New Trustees At A G M

 

At our AGM we will be nominating five new Trustees, after an extensive recruitment and interview process over the summer. We had a huge response from motivated and very highly skilled candidates and the Board had some tough decisions to make in whittling their shortlist down to our final nominees.

After the ABC members voted in changes to our Mems & Arts a couple of years ago, our Board comprises five ABC-member wall representative Trustees (one of whom is appointed by the ABC and holds the post until the ABC chooses a replacement) and up to four non-ABC Trustees. Trustees are appointed for a three-year term and can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms before standing down.

Our vacancies mean we propose two ABC member Trustees and three non-ABC Trustees:

*Ben Levey (ABC): Ben is the Centre Manager at The Castle. He is currently responsible for developing their Youth Programme, and has a host of additional skills and experience in his CV.
*Jeremy Tapping (ABC): Jez is Head of Climbing at The Westway. As well as his wealth of day to day experience, he has a number of degrees in Sport Management, Development and Coaching.
*Jaka Lednik (non-ABC):Jaka is a keen climber with an MBA from Harvard. He is a leading strategic consultant and managed the Commercial function of the Main Operations Centre at the 2012 Olympics.
*Carys Rowlands (non-ABC): Carys has climbed since she was 2yrs old. As senior conduct manager for the CIMA, she brings first class legal skills. She has a background in coaching and teaching sport and manages two London DJs.
*John Roberts (non-ABC): John will be known to many as a super keen climber and alpinist. He is an experienced entrepreneur within the education sector and brings financial and strategic skills along with educational links.

They join Neil Wightwick (ABC) who is taking over the role of Chair from Clare De Meyer as she stands down, Brian McAlinden (ABC), Liz Holley (non-ABC) and Treasurer and ABC-appointed representative Andy Reid.

We have a number of Level 4 & 5 training sessions coming up for existing NICAS and NIBAS centre coaches; these are suitable as reinductions for centres already offering these levels, but some sessions can be modified to act as first-time inductions for new / aspirant centres. Happy New Year! We are really excited to launch our National Indoor Climbing Awards Schemes survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/NICAS

This survey marks the start of a full scheme review in 2016. Our plan is to gain feedback from all young climbers; parents; teachers; climbing coaches and climbing centre managers alike, whether they take part in our schemes or not. We want to find out how \"fit for purpose\" the existing schemes are - and how we can improve upon them in the future. Please help us to circulate the survey link as broadly as possible to all your climbing colleagues, customers and contacts. In that way we hope that we might reach those who do not already participate or benefit, but might in the future.

There are prizes up for grabs and all feedback received will shape our future. Thank you for taking part and sharing our survey and we look forward to seeing the results!

N I C A S Binder Quantities & Courier Costs

 

With immediate effect, NICAS Level 3-5 binders will be provided to Primary Centres in multiples of 25 instead of 30.

Unfortunately, due to increasing costs the courier charge for any order including binders will increase from £20 + VAT to £23 + VAT. This does NOT affect any orders for Level 1-2 logbooks (with no binders).

A pricing structure sheet listing all our products and costs will be posted to every NICAS centre in the next few days.

Induction Dates For N I B A S Primary Centres

 

NIBAS induction dates for aspirant Primary Centres are confirmed as follows:

  • Wednesday 30th July - BMC Offices (Manchester)
  • Friday 1st August - Creation Climbing Centre (Birmingham)
  • Wednesday 13th August - Westway Climbing Centre (London)
  • Friday 15th August - Glasgow Climbing Centre
  • Wednesday 20th August - Redpoint Bristol

Each day runs from 10am to 4pm and will be classroom based with a maximum of 25 participants. The cost is £50pp + VAT. A booking form can be downloaded from www.nicas.co.uk/nibas/downloads.aspx.

The £50 fee will be deducted from the one-off Primary Centre fee of £450  for successful NIBAS applicant Primary Centres, subject to a maximum of £200 discount (4 attendees). Each person\'s attendance can only be counted as one discount against a single centre.

Please note that these inductions are for aspirant Primary Centre staff only at this time.

N I B A S Application Launch Today

 

We are delighted to announce the launch of the application process for aspirant NIBAS centres today. Later this afternoon you will find the following in the NIBAS Downloads section:

  • a copy of the NIBAS Digital Handbook in draft format
  • an application process
  • a registration form for all Accredited Centres (Levels 1 to 5)
  • a registration form for Primary Centre providership.

The finished version of the NIBAS Handbook will be published once the induction process is complete and the Scheme is ready to launch to candidates.

More information will appear on the front page of the NIBAS half of the site during the course of today.

Welsh Translator Required

 

The ABC Training Trust is looking for a Welsh translator for their forthcoming NIBAS documentation.

The NIBAS logbook must use the same linguistic style as our bilingual NICAS logbook, using both formal and technical Welsh terms. Some liaison with the BMC and Mountain Training may be necessary to agree technical words not yet agreed in Welsh. The logbook will be used in formal educational settings to teach both Bouldering and the Welsh language, so a very high standard is required.

This is a paid piece of work with a deadline of 8th August 2014. Please indicate your hourly or daily rate when applying.

2015 National Seminar: Feedback Sought

 

To all NICAS and aspirant NIBAS walls: this is YOUR opportunity to shape our national seminar at Plas y Brenin in February 2015. We are finalising the programme and speakers and would like your feedback on which topics you'd like us to run as workshops.

Currently we have confirmed Rebecca Williams (Managing the Fear of Falling) and John Kettle (Dynamic Movement and Momentum), with priority booking given to those who weren't able to attend their sessions last time. We're also very excited to have Rebecca Dent offering a classroom session on 'Physiology: training for your climbers and protecting their growing body, including injuries and injury prevention and nutrition'. We hope to have a second speaker working alongside Rebecca on this one.

Our unconfirmed topics, which came out of suggestions at the last seminar along with current hot topics, are as follows:

* Working with visually-impaired climbers
* Teaching climbers with challenging behaviours
* Basic fitness & exercise coaching; coordination & training for under-10s
* NIBAS levels 1-3
* NIBAS levels 4-5
* Coaching NICAS Level 3 and 4 to young climbers, including using video feedback as a Coaching resource
* Level 4 for younger climbers
* The business benefits of being a Primary Centre: how to make the most of our NICAS and NIBAS

What else would YOU like us to include or cover? Would you be interested in a factory tour of DMM on the Friday afternoon? Woudl you like us to invite speakers from Mountain Training, the BMC or other organisations? What would you like them to address? Do you know a great speaker you think would be motivational and inspirational to other instructors and climbing wall managers?

Our Saturday evening discussion session doesn't yet have a fixed topic: what would you like to debate in an open forum?

Database: Search Function Now Available

 

Following feedback from centres, the Online Candidate Database has been modified. Centres can now search by candidate surname (within their own records), as well as by candidate number. When adding a new candidate you can search by number if they've previously done NICAS elsewhere: this enables you to search the entire UK database.

For any centres who are having issues with the upgraded database, please check the following:

1. Please ensure you are logging in using the same codes as previously, but in a single field with a forward slash between the two sets, i.e. ABC/1234

2. Please clear your cache and history, then try logging in again (this will work if your candidate records are not showing)

3. Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported; please upgrade to IE11 or try another browser such as Firefox or Chrome

4. Please check that you are entering your password correctly

5. Any centres who had not registered for the new database prior to the change last week will now not be able to register and log in. We will create a manual registration and write to you with details.

NICAS logbooks: sales price increase

 

All NICAS centres should have received an email from us today with the new logbook prices in them.  They have increased as follows, the first increase since the scheme was launched in 2008:

Level 1 & 2 booklets now cost candidates up to a maximum RRP of 5 Pounds UKSterling or 6 Euros
Level 3-5 binders now cost candidates up to a maximum RRP of 8 Pounds UKSterling of 10 Euros

NICAS / NIBAS database testing

 

We are looking for 6 existing NICAS centres who are using the Online Candidate Database to help us beta-test a new version.  This will have new functions such as the ability to transfer candidates between centres and improved functionality for Internet Explorer users.  The trial will take place during the week of 24 February to 2 March, with each centre expected to dedicate a couple of hours to testing the system, then feeding back their findings to us. Centres who successfully complete the trial will be rewarded with free sew-on NICAS badges. If your centre would like to be available to participate in this trial please contact anne@nicas.co.uk, telling us your current operating system.

ABCTT announce their new Executive Officer

 

The ABC Training Trust is pleased and proud to announce the appointment of Martin Chester as the new Executive Officer of the ABC Training Trust.

 

Martin is currently the Director of Training at Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre.  He is an International Mountain Guide and has been a keen advocate for the development of coaching expertise in climbing over many years. You may have seen him speaking and presenting at NICAS and BMC coaching conference in the pasts. Building on the successful launch of the Coaching Award Scheme for Mountain Training, Martin is keen to apply his expertise to launching NIBAS and help NICAS fulfil its potential in supporting the development of young climbers.

 

 Martin says: “I have always enjoyed my involvement with NICAS, whether as a member of the coaching team, or at seminars and conferences. It has tremendous potential to influence the future of so many climbers in the positive development of our sport. I can\'t wait to see what we can achieve in the next stage of development for the ABC Training Trust.”

 

These are exciting times for the development of British climbing, with the launch of the Mountain Training Coaching Award Scheme; The development of FUNdamentals workshops; and the Talent Profiling work of the BMC. Martin has already played an important role in many of these recent developments. “This is such an exciting time for coaching in climbing. I am hoping to build on my success to see if I can develop a portfolio of well aligned projects” he says “and I’m looking forward to enjoying more of my own Guiding work as well – before my knees are too old”
 

Martin will take up the position from the first of April 2014.

EdExcel GCSE & NICAS

 

We are delighted to confirm that EdExcel have formally adopted NICAS as their syllabus for the GCSE PE (Indoor Climbing) as part of Adventurous Activities. EdExcel have started to send the syllabus to academic organisations under \'Meeting Local Needs\' so we will be in a position to issue a FINAL copy for reference, and a press release, within the next few weeks. The process for using NICAS within this context is as follows:

EdExcel refer to schools and academic organisations as Centres. For the purposes of this document, “Centre” refers to the academic organisation and not to a NICAS Primary centre, Awarding Centre or climbing wall. In order to use the EdExcel Indoor Climbing GCSE (PE) syllabus, the onus is on the academic organisation to seek approval from EdExcel.

The Centre must contact EdExcel to say they want to do the indoor version of GCSE climbing. EdExcel will send them the syllabus along with other necessary documentation under the \'Meeting Local Needs\' basis.  The Centre take this syllabus to their local climbing facility – a NICAS AC or PC – who may then deliver and assess for GCSE using the criteria laid down by EdExcel.

If a school contacts an AC or PC and say they want to do EdExcel GCSE PE Indoor Climbing, the AC / PC is responsible for delivery but only after the academic organisation has contacted EdExcel to seek formal approval. 

Candidates may follow the EdExcel syllabus without being registered for NICAS, however they will not receive NICAS certificates as they achieve each level.  If they wish, they can register for NICAS at a later date and retrospectively log their progress to be allowed Direct Entry to the appropriate level of the Scheme.

We have received an application from Awesome Walls Sheffield to become a NICAS Primary Centre. In accordance with usual practice, we are opening a 30-day public consultation period to enable any interested parties to send a submission about the proposal.  Please email anne@nicas.co.uk with any comments.  The Board will meet in January 2014 to consider this application.

Job Vacancy: Executive Officer Post for the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust

 

The ABCTT is a limited company and registered charity that administers the NICAS scheme and is currently developing the new NIBAS (bouldering) scheme. Its aims are to promote education and training in climbing and it has ambitious plans to provide the structure for high standard grass roots coaching in the sport. The NICAS scheme has registered over 55,000 young people for coaching since its inception in 2008.

The Board of Trustees seeks to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Executive Officer to head the management and development of the Trust\'s activities from the beginning of 2014. The successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of the indoor climbing industry and coaching profession. They will bring strategic vision to the post along with excellent communication skills, business acumen and proven management experience. They will be responsible for the management of the Trust\'s officers and for liaising and negotiating with stakeholder organisations. 

The initial contract will be for 1 day per week (0.2) on a pro rata salary of UKSterling40,000. The post is funded by Sports England and will initially be for 3 years.  Under Board review against targets set by Sport England these hours may be increased and the tenure extended.

Accredited centre renewal fees from 01/06/2013

 

A reminder to all our accredited centres: from 1st June 2013 the renewal fees for accredited Centres are changing as follows:

Lvl 1 centres: £30.00 plus VAT (no change)
Lvl 2 centres: £35.00 plus VAT (£5.00 + VAT  increase)
Lvl 3 centres: £50.00 plus VAT (no change)
Lvl 4 centres: £60.00 plus VAT (£10.00 + VAT increase)

There will be no change to the renewal fee for Primary Centres.

BMC Para Climbing Competition 2013

 

We are excited about the upcoming BMC Para-Climbing Series, whose first round is on Tuesday 26th March 2013 at the Castle in London.  This is a series of three competitive events for climbers with disabilities to enable to BMC to identify talent to help create a GB Para-Climbing team.  Entries are online. If you have any NICAS candidates taking part in the competition please let us know - we'd love to feature their stories and experiences in a future newsletter.

Annual renewal increases from 01/06/2013

 

As highlighted in our October 2012 newsletter, from 1st June 2013 the renewal fees for Awarding Centres are changing as follows:

Lvl 1 centres: £30.00 plus VAT (no change)
Lvl 2 centres: £35.00 plus VAT (£5.00 + VAT  increase)
Lvl 3 centres: £50.00 plus VAT (no change)

Merchandise at NICAS seminar

 

We will have NICAS badges and the new Visually Impaired logbooks and certificates available to buy at the NICAS seminar, Plas y Brenin, 2nd-3rd February 2013.  With 86 confirmed delegates it's going to be a busy, exciting weekend.  There is still availability on workshops E through to K, with accommodation if required, so any last-minute bookings are welcomed.

Visually Impaired booklets now available

 

The new Level 1 & 2 logbook has been produced in Large Print format for the use of Visually Impaired candidates.  Designed with the help of OnThisRoc the A4 booklet, and accompanying Level 1 and 2 certificates, aim to make the scheme accessible to more candidates.  Available at £4 each (exempt from VAT) they can be ordered from anne@nicas.co.uk.

A reminder to all scheme users

 

Please be aware that photocopies of logbooks and certificates are not acceptable.  All candidates must have an original, bound, printed logbook or binder for their personal use.  Photocopies of specific pages may be used only where they are being taken into a training area and the original is kept safe elsewhere for later completion.  If you are offered a photocopy of a logbook or certificate, instead of an original, please report it to us immediately. If you are experiencing difficulties obtaining stocks of original logbooks please contact us, stating the name of the centre involved, so we can investigate.

News from the Youth World Championships

New Level 1 & 2 booklets now available

 

The new Level 1/2 booklets have now been printed and are available for order through your Primary Centre.  The revised Welsh-English bilingual version, the Scheme Handbook and a Large Print logbook are all in production and will follow over the next few weeks.

National seminar: 2-3 Feb 2013

 

We are delighted to confirm NICAS is offering a national seminar at Plas y Brenin on the weekend of 2-3 February 2013 (residential).  A programme and costs will be published shortly, with bookings to open imminently.

The Quay (Exeter) - new Primary Centre

 

We are pleased to confirm that The Quay Climbing Centre in Exeter has changed from a Level 4 Awarding Centre to a Level 5 Primary Centre.

West View (Preston) - new Primary Centre

 

We are pleased to confirm that West View Leisure Centre in Preston has changed from a Level 4 Awarding Centre to a Level 5 Primary Centre.

New handbook / logbook date

 

At yesterday's ABCTT Board meeting the new handbook and logbook were unveiled and discussed.  The Board hope to have the final amendments completed and new stocks printed by the beginning of September 2012 for the new school term.  Existing stock will not be invalidated, but we are running down our stocks of logbooks in anticipation of the changes.  Please email anne@nicas.co.uk with any queries.

NICAS Ambassadors

Free RockFax posters available to download

 

Following the success of Sophie Mitchell\'s book \"The Beginners\' Guide For Climbers\" Rockfax have produced two posters which are available for free download. Poster 1 is the Pre-Climb check, poster 2 is the Belay sequence.

Carriage costs increase

 

With effect from 1st June 2012 the carriage costs for logbook orders will be as follows:

1 x box of Part 1 booklets £16.04 + VAT
1 x box of Part 2 binders £17.71 + VAT
Multiple box orders remain at £20 + VAT

An email has been sent to all centres and Technical Advisors today setting out forthcoming changes to NICAS, including NICAS proposed name change, VAT registration, annual data, re-registration, carriage costs and badges. Free book for every NICAS centre

 

Every active NICAS Primary and Awarding Centre is to be sent a copy of Sophie Mitchell\'s \"Beginner\'s Guide for Climbers\", published by Rockfax, once the stock arrives with us in February.  If your centre has not yet sent back your Annual Data return to 31st May 2011 you will not receive the book, so please contact anne@nicas.co.uk immediately with your data if necessary.

NICAS Badges - new postage costs

 

Following advice from Royal Mail, all future NICAS badges orders will be sent Special Delivery Next Day rather than our previous arrangement of Signed For.  To minimise the impact of this increased cost to Primary Centres, the handling fee is reduced from UKP3 to UKP1.50 for all orders placed from 11/01/2012 onwards.

BMC DVD: Climbing Wall Essentials

 

The BMC\'s new DVD \"Climbing Wall Essentials\" is now available.  With chapters covering all aspects of indoor climbing, including NICAS, it\'s applicable to all indoor climbers regardless of their age or experience.  You can buy it direct from the BMC\'s online shop.

NICAS sew-on badges for each level of the scheme are now available!  Samples will be posted to Primary and Awarding Centres over the next few days and further supplies will be available to order through Primary Centres shortly.

Changes to the BMC Youth Climbing Series

 

The BMC has announced exciting changes to their Youth Climbing Series competitions from 2012.  More details, including future dates, can be found at http://thebmc.co.uk/News.aspx?id=2158

These competitions are ideal for NICAS candidates working towards Levels 4 and 5, and accessible to all youth climbers from age 7 and up.

ABCTT AGM & Trustees

 

The ABCTT AGM will take place on Wednesday 16th March 2011.  At this meeting a number of ABCTT Trustees will be resigning with some standing for re-election.

We welcome applications from anyone representing a climbing wall holding full ABC membership who wishes to be an ABCTT Trustee.  Applications should be submitted to Guy Jarvis, ABCTT Chair on guy@nicas.co.uk to be received no later than Tuesday 8th March 2011.

NICAS National Seminar - extra date 30/03/2011

Welsh NICAS - message from Guy Jarvis, chair of ABCTT

 

We are pleased to inform you that the ABCTT has now produced an English/Welsh bilingual version of the part 1 student logbook covering levels 1 and 2. These 32 page booklets are of the same design as the original English version but have both English and Welsh translations of each page. The bilingual version costs the same as the English only version. We have also produced Welsh versions of the level 1 and 2 certificates (not bilingual). This has been a long standing project of the ABCTT and we would particularly like to thank Berwyn Evans of the Beacon climbing centre for all his work on it.

The logbooks can be ordered in the usual way from Primary Centres for Awarding Centres and from Anne for Primary Centres.

National seminars

 

We are delighted to announce that over the next few months we are offering four national NICAS seminars.  We are bringing together representatives of NICAS, MLT, BMC, ABC and AMI to discuss the future of indoor climbing and coaching, as well as offering coaching advice and four workshop options:
* Coaching and how to run a squad;
* Advice for Technical Advisers working with indoor walls;
* Issues involved with Youth Lead Climbing;
* NICAS and working with GCSE, QCF and DofE.
The seminars are taking place in Swindon, Edinburgh, Manchester and Leicester.  Please contact anne@nicas.co.uk for more details.

Two new member Trustees

 

Following the ABCTT board meeting on 15th July 2010 we are delighted to announce the appointment of two Member Trustees: Matt Keates and Clare de Meyer.  They will represent members\' views and concerns.

Scheme Launched

 

The NICAS scheme has now been launched and is available for individuals and climbing walls to register on to. Twenty two Primary Centres around the country currently run the scheme and can induct other centres who have registered to deliver the scheme. The NICAS website gives details of how to register, where to contact your nearest Primary Centre and the small costs involved.
