Competition Pathways: from NICAS to GB

Competition Pathways: what comps are there?

Within England and Wales, the pathway is to compete from NICAS grassroots upwards to the GB Climbing levels can be laid out as follows (NB we are checking and will update with differences within the Scottish and Irish pathways):

  • Home wall competition such as a Winter Bouldering League. Competing in a familiar environment gets climbers used to a more competitive experience but in a known space with known people to build confidence.
  • Other local comps (Check Social Media, ask around whether coaches know any others). There are many different competitions both locally and regionally. Climbers can work with coaches to select and enter suitable local competitions. A lot of larger facilities run competitions, and they are a fun, sociable introduction to the world of competition climbing
  • Local/regional Series (Multi-Site Competitions – e.g. Midlands Youth Series, London Climbing Series, Blokfest)
  • Regional Qualifiers (BMC Youth Climbing Series YCS Rounds – Bouldering and Lead)
  • National Competitions (Junior British Bouldering Championships JBBC’s and Junior British Lead Championships JBLC’s)
  • Selection Event (Invited based on talent scouting and rank at Nationals)
  • National Development Squad (e.g. England Regional Talent Squad)
  • International Competitions (IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships)
  • Selected for GB Climbing Team (IFSC Climbing World Cup – Boulder / Lead / Speed)
  • Selected for Team GB (Olympics Climbing Competition – Boulder / Lead / Speed)
