Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

Ground-breaking Ramadan guidance was developed by Dr Irfan Khawaja at Birmingham City University and launched in January 2024. The guidance was developed to create a more inclusive environment in schools for Muslim students and staff engaging in physical education, and Dr Khawaji collaborated with the Youth Sport Trust, Association of Physical Education, Muslim Council of Britain, and Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity to produce the paper, which you can read in full here.

Though this is not a climbing specific resource, we believe this guidance is useful and provides general advice for coaches who need to consider the needs of their climbers during Ramadan.

When is Ramadan?

The Islamic Calendar follows a lunar cycle and because of this dates in one year will vary from the previous. In 2024, Ramadan start date in the UK is expected to be Sunday, 10 March 2024, and fasting will conclude on the evening of Tuesday, 9 April 2024. These dates are subject to the official moon sighting.
